Let me introduce you to my project: Ethera
Ever heard of Symphonic Metal with Opera Vocals and Harp? Well, that’s the project I have been working on for a while now. I’ve been talking a lot about it in the past few years, but I needed to learn to imagine and write a style of music that does not already exists, and it took me a lot of time. I was wandering in a land of the unknown* for a long time, but I now see the path that I’m supposed to take, and it feels like such a relief.
I thought that it would be a great introduction to Ethera to just take the time to answer some of the questions that I often get asked!
What was your inspiration for this project?
Since I was a child, I have always been a great fan of Nightwish. Later on came Epica and Within Temptation. There is something about Symphonic metal that makes me shiver. I love how these bands are about contrast and dynamics, and how their melodies are always so lyrical and fun to sing. I love the epicness of orchestration combined with the energy of a metal band. My music is greatly inspired by them, but there is also something absolutely unique about my music, and it’s the importance that I was to give to the harp.
What makes your music unique?
Despite the fact that I am greatly inspired by the Symphonic Metal bands, the fact that I was to include the harp as a main part of my music is absolutely unique. The harp is often used as a background instrument by these bands, and is most of the time sampled, but in my case, I really want to make it feel like the harpist is part of the band.
How do you incorporate the harp in your music? Is it hard?
Yes, I find it very hard to make sure there’s a place for it as guitars and drums are naturaly much louder than my harp. When I write my music, I always have to keep in mind the place that I want to give to the harp. I happened to realise that the harp is much more noticeable in it’s upper range when the whole band is playing, so that’s also a trick that I use to make it easier to incorporate.
Do you have any releases?
Not yet, I am currently producing the very first Ethera album! I don’t yet have a date for it’s release because it is way too early to decide, but you can hear demos on my soundcloud:
It feels amazing to see my songs slowly being brought to life, and I just cannot wait for you to hear them too!
